With more repeat business than almost any other safari destination South Africa’s history, culture, food and wine scene and its private game reserves make it a phenomenal destination.

Accessible from most European countries with direct flights, home to the Big Five and exceptional wildlife viewing there is a lot to be gained from a South African safari. It was here that one of our co-founder’s, Will first went on safari and where the safari bug first bit.

Key Information

  • South Africa is truly a year round destination from a safari point of view. Game viewing remains largely consistent throughout but the weather does change, as do sunrise hours so make sure you check if you are not a real morning person!

July - October: Temperatures across most safari destinations can range from single figures in the morning and rising to mid 20’s in the afternoon and mainly dry

November - June: Temperatures pick up, along with the humidity once with clouds start to build and the rain begins to arrive.

  • Safari: There are a real wealth of options in South Africa. Matt’s recommendations would undoubtedly be the Sabi Sands, a selection of private games reserves adjacent to the famous Kruger National Park. The Sands offer world class game viewing, especially for Leopards. Mala Mala and Londolozi are firm favourites of ours at AF.

Coast: Again a huge variety here and access to two different oceans (the Atlantic and the Pacific). Cape Town attracts millions of visitors a year and has stunning coast line, Table Mountain and a huge variety of food and drinks options.

  • Photography: Mala Mala. The concentration of wildlife on this private game reserve is unrivaled, especially with regards to Leopard and Lion. Off road driving is permitted and specialist photographic vehicles are available.

Honeymoon: Londolozi, private granite suites provide beautiful, exclusive accommodation set in one of South Africa’s most beautiful locations.

Family: Londolozi Pioneer Camp Homstead. A wonderful, quiet place to take children and immerse them in life ‘in the bush’.

Our Favourites

Mala Mala

The concentration of wildlife on this private game reserve is unrivalled, especially with regards to leopard and lion. Off road driving is permitted and specialist photographic vehicles are available. A photographers paradise.

Londolozi Pioneer

Our favourite for honeymooners. First rate accommodation set amongst one of South Africa’s premier game viewing areas, the staff here are exceptional and bettered only by the scenery.

A great lodge for anyone looking to relax at the start of their safari and ease in to life ‘in the bush’. Alternatively finish your trip here and make the most of the slower pace of life and reflect on your trip of a life time.

Karoo Lodge

A gem if there ever was one. Nestled within an amphitheatre of mountains this family friendly lodge is brimming with activities for families, honeymooners and photographers alike.

Walking and birding are exceptional here, as is the accommodation and food. Renovated in 2023 it reopens in December and promises to be a firm Armstrong Fortescue favourite.
