Not many countries have an allure like Tanzania. The Serengeti National Park is one of the biggest in Africa and home to the longest stretch of the Great Migration. The adventurous tackle Mt. Kilimanjaro or head to Lake Victoria while the northern sector remains one of the most popular safari routes on the continent.
Those looking for a classic two week safari and coast option are spoilt for choice here, whether you get off the beaten track of stick to what’s known. Finishing in Zanzibar is favoured by many, rightly so, or even head across the border to visit stretches of Kenya’s amazing coastline.
Key Information
-
December - Early March: Typically dry. Wildebeest head south and calve in February. Amazing storm clouds brew in anticipation of the incoming rains.
March - May: Known as ‘green season’ this can deter the less hardy tourists and open up amazing opportunities for the intrepid. If you’re prepared to enjoy the odd storm (which are quite something to behold) you’re in for a treat.
June - October: Typically dry as the wildebeest (and tourists) head to Kenya. Known as ‘high season’ so expect tourist numbers to rise but weather and game viewing fantastic.
October - November: Known as the short rains as increased rain fall bring the wildebeest back from Kenya to Tanzania. Storms are smaller and less frequent but still a sight to behold.
-
Safari: The Serengeti cannot be missed here. Whether you time your safari to follow the migration or want to get off the beaten track there are plenty of options for you.
The most adventurous may want to consider Rubondo Island on Lake Victoria or Nyerere National Park.
Coast: Almost all Tanzanian safari guests want to add a few days in Zanzibar. White sand beaches, crystal clear water and old spice markets abound.
-
Photography: If visiting the Sergengeti then the big cat density at Namiri Plains is hard to better. The region was closed for 24 years to tourism and the cats and game flourished in this time.
Honeymoon: Olkaria Migration Camp, with its unique star bed approach, is a must for honeymooners. Sleep under the stars as you start married life together.
Family: Jabali Private House. A wonderfully intimate exclusive use house, surrounded by ancient Baobab trees in Ruaha National Park. Walking safaris and night drives will give you a family experience to remember forever.

Our Favourites
Namiri Plains
A haven for big cat sightings and where co-founder Will has taken his best selling lion prints. The region was closed for over 20 years to see how big cat numbers would respond (they boomed) and so you can now see lion, leopard and cheetah on almost every game drive.
Paired with phenomenal guides and a stunning camp this is one of our favourite destinations in Africa.
Rubondo Island
A combination of chimpanzee trekking, fishing, sand beaches and an island national park make this one of the most unique safari destinations in Tanzania.
Spend the morning hiking amongst our closest living ancient relatives and then get your toes in the Lake Victoria in the afternoon as you fish for Nile perch or just enjoy the view with a gin and tonic. A real hidden gem in this alluring country.
Olkaria
A migration camp set up seasonally Olkaria Migration Camp is a phenomenal spot to see cats hunting and thousands upon thousands of wildebeest.
Head here for the migration calving season and get lost amongst the herds before making the most of the Olkaria’s star tents at night. A wonderful option in the early months of the year to be away from the crowds.
