Zimbabwe is the ultimate destination to experience Africa on foot. Mana Pools in particular, gives you the opportunity to experience Africa in her rawest form. Not only do you see wildlife form a completely different perspective but Zimbabwe allows you to feel wild like nowhere else.
Those looking for a classic safari experience and some time relaxing afterwards are perfectly placed, with beautiful safari experiences paired with the must see Victoria Falls, the widest curtain of falling water in the world.
Key Information
-
May - November: This is considered the dry season and therefore optimum time to visit. As the season progresses and water becomes less available wildlife is drawn to the remaining water sources, such as the Zambezi river in Mana Pools and the various water holes in Hwnage National Park.
The game viewing gets better the deeper into the season you go, however the tempertaures begin to rise come the end of August, making August/September prime visiting times as the water is beginning to subside and the temperatures are manageable. October can see temperatures sky rocket, drawing wildlife to water holes but only venture to the bush in October if you love the heat.
December - April: Known as the green season. You can still visit Hwange however the majority of camps in Mana Pools close during the rains. Hwange is still worth visiting this time of year and works great in conjunction with Victoria falls. A great time to steal a deal and enjoy a quiet safari.
-
Safari: Mana Pools is a must for anyone visiting Zimbabwe and offers one of the most adventurous safaris on the continent, with elephants and lion approachable on foot and the ‘blue’ forests of Mana Pools a stunning backdrop to your images.
Hwange is a perfect destination for Lion and Elephant lovers. The series of waterholes act as a life line in the height of the dry season and draw in big tuskers and beautiful “kalahari” lion.
Relax: Victoria Falls. This is a must if visiting Zimbabwe. With an International airport with great links it is the perfect place to start or finish your safari. There are game viewing opportunities here, however if you are visiting Mana Pools or Hwange during your safari we would recommend focusing on the Falls themselves.
-
Photography: Mana Pools: African Bush Camps Zambezi Expeditions is perfectly located to experience the best Mana Pools has to offer. Set on the banks of the Zambezi with beautiful views across to Zambia. Due to its location it gives you the opportunity to get right into the heart of the action.
We would also strongly recommend 2-3 nights at African Bush Camp’s Kanga Camp, home of the “Arm chair” Safari.
Honeymoon: Mana Pools: African Bush Camps Nyamatusi Camp. Beautifully situated on the banks of the Zambezi river, within its own private concession. This beautifully located and fabulously luxurious camp is the perfect place to revel in the beauty of Married life.
Family: Hwange, African Bush Camps Somalisa Acacia. A camp perfectly set up for families of all ages with specially designed family tents and specialist kid friendly activities. This is the perfect place for families to experience a truly authentic safari.

Our Favourites
Mana Pools
Revered within the industry for unrivalled walking safaris and its pristine woodlands there may be nowhere else in Africa you can get this close to members of the Big Five on foot. Luxury abounds for those wanting to relax after a day out on foot or in a Land Rover or get in to the ‘bush’ feeling with a more stripped back camp experience.
Hwange
A stark contrast to Mana Pools (and therefore the perfect pairing) here it’s all about elephants and lion.
The elephant population here is one of the largest in all of Africa and with four of the Big Five on display (no rhino) a real bucket list destination for those wanting to tick off species for the first time.
Victoria Falls
A place that needs no introduction. The world’s largest umbrella waterfall system and a site that leaves all in awe.
We rate the Victoria Falls as one of our favourite safari bookends, the perfect start or finish to a trip no matter your style, budget or holiday type. A place certainly not to be missed.
